Geena Davis was born in Chicago, Illinois. At age three she moved with her family to California, where she attended school at Granada Hills High School. Davis went on to study theatre at San Francisco State University and the University of California at Los Angeles, where she performed in a number of productions. After graduating in 1972, Davis began a seven-year acting career which included a role in the cult classic thriller Soylent Green
In 1977, Davis made her professional directorial debut working on a short film for the PBS series "California Gold," which aired in 1978. In 1980 she wrote and directed a documentary about child abuse entitled "A Child is Waiting." In 1981, Davis began working as a producer on the NBC series "Knots Landing," where she remained until 1985 when she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in feature films. Her feature film debut was in Imaginary Heroes (1986), followed by a leading role in The Flyboys (1986).
In 1987, Davis co-starred with Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover in Disney's Thelma & Louise. She continued her Hollywood career with leading roles in Jumpin' Jack Flash (1988) and Look Who's Talking Too (1989). In 1990, she received critical acclaim for her dramatic portrayal of a woman diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in Possession starring Patric Knowles.
Since then, Davis has starred in many films including Beethoven's 2nd (1992), A League of Their Own (1992), The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), and Men of Honor (2000).
